Beyond Gold: The Journey to the First Youth Olympic Games

I was at an exclusive media preview of a documentary on the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) - "Beyond Gold: The Journey to the First Youth Olympic Games", at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard.
The inaugural Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010. The logo above is called the "Spirit of Youth", comprising The Flame of Passion (red flame), The Star of Champions (purple star), and The Crescent of Tomorrow (green crescent).

The highly anticipated international sport event - Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (http://www.singapore2010.sg/public/sg2010/en.html).

This documentary traces the journey of 3 young Team Singapore athletes: Alvin Phoon (cycling), Lim Chin Jie (judo) and Rania Rahardja (fencing), in their quest for a spot to represent Singapore in YOG. You'll be able to get a glimpse into their ambitions, struggles and beliefs.

“Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character” - T. Alan Armstrong

The documentary also gave an insight to the process behind the making of the Singapore 2010 mascots - Lyo and Merly. And the hard work those people wearing the mascots have put in.

Another element in the documentary - the Singapore 2010 YOG aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values: Excellence, Friendship and Respect.

:: Excellence & Commitment ::
~ Always commit and strive for excellence in everything you do.

:: Friendship & Teamwork ::
~ Work as a team and bond as friends.

:: Respect + Integrity::
~ Respect the individual for who they are and act with integrity.

:: Friendship ::

The Olympic Motto: "CITIUS, ALTIUS, FORTIUS" - which means Swifter, Higher, Stronger. Never be complacent; Compete with self; Go beyond self and reach new goals.

THE MBA OATH

As a business leader I recognize my role in society.

• My purpose is to lead people and manage resources to create value that no single individual can create alone.
• My decisions affect the well-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and tomorrow.

Therefore, I promise that:
• I will manage my enterprise with loyalty and care, and will not advance my personal interests at the expense of my enterprise or society.
• I will understand and uphold, in letter and spirit, the laws and contracts governing my conduct and that of my enterprise.
• I will refrain from corruption, unfair competition, or business practices harmful to society.
• I will protect the human rights and dignity of all people affected by my enterprise, and I will oppose discrimination and exploitation.
• I will protect the right of future generations to advance their standard of living and enjoy a healthy planet.
• I will report the performance and risks of my enterprise accurately and honestly.
• I will invest in developing myself and others, helping the management profession continue to advance and create sustainable and inclusive prosperity.

In exercising my professional duties according to these principles, I recognize that my behavior must set an example of integrity, eliciting trust and esteem from those I serve. I will remain accountable to my peers and to society for my actions and for upholding these standards.

This oath I make freely, and upon my honor.

Singaporean fans include Mr Chen Shichang, 25, a student who has spent about $300 on items such as a commemorative coin set ($208), a Lyo plush toy, as well as keychains and pins.
He said: "I wanted something to commemorate this occasion, and also to celebrate our nation's hosting of this world event."
However, his choices are design-driven too.
"The coin set's design is elegantly done, and only a limited quantity has been minted, making it a very attractive collectors' item," he said.

:: Tips on making the best of your coin investment ::
  • Read up beforehand.
  • Pick out proof coins made from a precious metal like gold or silver. Avoid plated coins.
  • Look out for historical significance, like the anniversary of a major event, or the first of its kind.
  • Scarcity - the more limited the supply, the tighter the demand, which should drive up prices.
  • Look for 3rd party certification from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
  • Check carefully for a coin's condition and the way it was made.

MayDay Concert 2010

Thanks to SYOGOC for the pair of tickets.
what: DNA Mayday World Tour Concert (2010 Unlimited Edition)
五月天世界巡回演唱会 变形DNA *(无限放大版)
when: 17 April 2010 (Sat), 7.30pm
where: National Stadium

Originally the concert was planned to be held at the Padang. It was then changed venue to National Stadium. It was Mayday's 1st outdoor concert in Singapore, and my 1st time too.

Lessons learnt on how to prepare for an outdoor concert:
- get into the mood by listening to the band's songs: so that you can sing along during the concert
- know how to get to the venue (http://gothere.sg/maps#q:national%20stadium)
- take the public transport
- know where you'll be sitting (look at the seating plan)
- if you're sitting far away from the stage, you might want to bring binoculars.
- get there early, as there will be crowd
- have a meal before the concert
- understand the rules and regulations
(e.g. no external food & drinks, no professional photography/videography equipment)
- be prepared for wet weather (be ready with poncho, cap, slippers)
- bring a piece of plastic sheet (or poncho) to cover the seats, as it may be wet
- bring light-sticks
- wear casual
- visit the restroom before the concert starts
- last but not least, remember to bring the tickets (take a pic of the tix)

Enjoy the concert!
