This December Four Boys Become Men

I received a pair of tickets to watch a movie preview of The Inbetweeners on 23rd December 2011 (Fri), at GV Plaza (Hall 8), courtesy of Golden Village and omy.sg!

According to the Urban Dictionary, an "Inbetweener" is defined as:

Someone who clearly not "cool enough" to hang out with the cool kids, yet see's themselves as being above the typical losers on the social pyramid.

An inbetweener, as implied by the name is a male neither a boy nor a man,it is that perfect inbetween stage where looks are still pumping strong but nothing is yet wrinkled.
Also this stage allows for the awesomeness of a younger male with the maturity of a man.
An inbetweener is not fickle and wants to have fun.

:: About the movie ::

The Inbetweeners is originally a British sitcom which aired for three series from 2008. Since it release, it has received plenty of positive reviews and critics and was even nominated for ‘Best Situation Comedy’ at BAFTA twice, in 2009 and 2010.

The Inbetweeners movie is released after the final TV series. The 2011 British comedy film directed by Ben Palmer, who directed all six episodes of the second series and all but the last of the third of The Inbetweeners and produced by Christopher Young who produced all three series of the TV show. The film follows the four main characters on holiday in Malia.

The story is about four teenagers, Will Mckenzie (Simon Bird), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Jay Cartwright (James Buckley) and Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) who have finished their final exams and are about to leave school. Within their final week, a series of bad events happened where Simon got dumped by the love of his life - Carli; Jay's grandfather dies; and Will's father reveals he's married his mistress.

Depressed, the boys decide to go on holiday and Neil books them on a trip to Malia, Crete together in hoping for “sun, sea, sand, booze and sex”.

Their accommodation is awful but everything turned around when they met four girls, Lucy (Tamla Kari), Jane (Lydia Rose Bewley), Lisa (Jessica Knappett) and Alison (Laura Haddock), in an empty bar during their first night out.

:: Part 1 - Tan Kim Seng Fountain, Cenotaph and Lim Bo Seng Memorial ::

Tan Kim Seng Fountain

Date of construction: 1882

Date of Gazette: 28 December 2010

Address: Esplanade Park, Connaught Drive

The Tan Kim Seng Fountain is a fine example of a 19th century cast-iron fountain. It represents the Municipal Council’s efforts to commemorate Tan Kim Seng’s contributions towards bettering society. It was unveiled on 19 May 1882 at Battery Road in Fullerton Square by then President of the Municipality, Sir Thomas Scott. Designed by Messrs Andrew Handyside & Co. Britannia Iron Works, the fountain features four Muses in the lower bowl: Calliope holding a book or a writing tablet; Clio holding a scroll; Erato holding a lyre and Melpomene holding a garland. Tan was a supporter of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the President of the principal Chinese temple in Malacca and the leader of the Chinese community in Singapore. His other contributions to society include the building and endowing of the Chinese Free School, known as Chui Eng Si E, in Amoy Street. (source: http://www.pmb.sg/?page_id=953)

Cenotaph

Date of Construction: 1920-1922

The Cenotaph is the first military commemorative structure in Singapore that honours individuals who perished in both the First and Second World Wars. It was initially erected to commemorate the 124 men from the colony of Singapore who never returned from the war in Europe. Then Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Laurence Nunns Guillermard, laid the foundation stone on 15 November 1920 in the presence of then French Premier M Georges Clemenceau. Prince of Wales unveiled the Cenotaph in March 1922. Designed by Denis Santry of Swan and MacLaren, the memorial bears bronze tablets with inscriptions of those who perished during the First World War, with the inscription that reads: “To Our Glorious Dead”. Crowning the roof of the war memorial is a bronze medallion comprising a laurel wreath of victory enclosing the crown, symbolising the Colony of Singapore. The bronze sculpture works on the Cenotaph were done by a well-known Swiss sculptor, Mr. R. Wenings and the Central Engine Works manufactured the bronze castings. After the Second World War (September 1945), a dedication was made on the other side of the Cenotaph, in memory of those who fought and died during the Second World War. Lim Bo Seng Memorial

Date of construction: 1953-1954

The Lim Bo Seng Memorial is a dedicated tribute to Lim Bo Seng, who died during the Japanese Occupation period in 1944. He was held captive by the Japanese Secret Police in Ipoh after a spy identified him as a member of the resistance army. The Lim Bo Seng Memorial Committee, comprising representatives from the Chung King Government, was established to raise funds for a memorial. Then British Commissioner General for Southeast Asia, Malcolm MacDonald, laid the foundation stone in 1953 and then Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Loewen, Commander-in-Chief of the Far East Land Forces, unveiled the memorial on 29 June 1954. There are four bronze plaques with text in English, Chinese, Tamil and Jawi, illustrating Lim Bo Seng’s life, embedded on the framed mouldings at the base of the memorial. Designed by prominent local architect Ng Keng Siang, the memorial is a significant piece of Chinese National Style architecture and is the only built structure to commemorate an individual who contributed to the war efforts in the Second World War. Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church

Date of Construction: 1924

Date of Gazette: 23 March 1989

Architect: Swan and McLaren

The origins of this church of the Hokkien Chinese may be traced to a rented shophouse in Japan Street (now Boon Tat Street). In 1913, the church had already bought what was to be its present site, a piece of land at the junction of Telok Ayer Street and Cecil Street. But construction work did not follow at once, and services were held under a tent which soon collapsed. A chapel of wood and corrugated iron was then erected but this too was soon filled to capacity. It was not until 1924-25 that the large and permanent building that you see today was built. The well known Chinese evangelist, John Sung preached here in 1935. Al-Abrar Mosque

Date of Construction: 1850-1855

Date of Gazette: 19 November 1974

The alternative name for this mosque is Kuchu Palli, which is a Tamil term meaning the “hut mosque”. This indicates the humble beginnings of the mosque in the early 19th century. The brick and plaster building was not built until 1850-55. The mosque is discernible in an 1856 painting by Percy Carpenter entitled “Telok Ayer as seen from Mount Wallich”. Thian Hock Keng

Date of Construction: 1839-1842 (Thian Hock Keng), 1849 (Chung Wen Pagoda), 1913 (Chong Hock Pavilion)

Situated at the site of a joss house where immigrants from China to Singapore offered thanks for a safe voyage, the temple was built between 1839-1842. Historical data relating to the founding of the temple, and the list of donors were inscribed on several plaques inside the main courtyard to the right and left of the main entrance. Tan Tock Seng was the biggest donor, and the Hokkien Association was initially based at the temple. Tan Tock Seng’s son, Tan Kim Ching, inherited his father’s mantle as head of the Hokkien Association. One of his duties was to register Hokkien marriages at his office within the temple precincts. The pillars of iron wood and granite and the carved stonework used for this temple were imported from China at a handsome expense. The chief deity, Ma-Cho-Po or Goddess of the Seafarers, was brought from Fukien Province and enshrined here in 1840. (source: http://www.pmb.sg/?page_id=169)

Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre

Date of Construction: 1827-1830

Date of Gazette: 19 November 1974

This shrine built between 1827-1830 to the memory of a holy man, Shahul Hamid of Nagore, but it contains no bodily relic of him. It is fascinating for its combination of Palladian features on the street level with the Islamic balustrade above. There is also a Nagore Durgha shrine located in Chulia Street, Penang. This suggests that the pioneers of this community in both Singapore and Penang meant to build replicas of the original shrine in Negapatam, South India, to commemorate in the places they ventured out to as expatriates and sojourners. Remembering our hero - This is the view when you bow your head at the Lim Bo Seng Memorial - a memorial structure which was constructed in 1953 as a dedicated tribute to a hero during the Japanese Occupation in 1944.

"Major-General Lim Bo Seng (1909-1944) was born on the 27th of April, 1909 in Nan-An, Fukien, China. He came to Singapore at the age of 16. ... Since 1937 he became prominent in anti-Japanese activities. When Singapore fell in 1942 he went to Chungking and on instructions from the Chinese Government, he joined the underground resistance under the Supreme Allied Command Southeast Asia. ... But he was discovered and arrested by the Japanese military police on 27th March 1944. He manfully endured repeated tortures to which he ultimately succomed on 29th June 1944 at the age of 35. He died in the Batu Gajah prison a martyr to the cause of a liberated Malaya and to his loyalty to the comrades on the 13th January 1946. He was buried with full military honours in Singapore.

Erected by The Lim Bo Seng Memorial Committee, 29th June 1954". — at Lim Bo Seng Memorial.

The Sultan Mosque holds great significance for the Muslim community, and is considered the national mosque of Singapore. Also known as Masjid Sultan, it was named for Sultan Hussein Shah.

The mosque was first built between 1824 and 1826, and was replaced by the current building between 1924 and 1928. It was designated a national monument in 1975. (source: Infopedia) — at Masjid Sultan.

Halloween creeps in at Singapore Flyer this October, with unnerving ghouls and ghosts that will take your innermost fears beyond the next level!

On 20 October 2011 (Thu), I was privileged to be amongst the first in Singapore to experience Singapore Flyer's Fright Fest, courtesy of Marina Bay Singapore, Singapore Flyer and omy.sg.

Before we enter into Fright Fest, we took the Singapore Flyer Flight and enjoyed the night view.

:: Journey of Dreams ::
The interactive gallery seeks to enhance guest experience as it gives a better understanding and appreciation of the Singapore Story and the iconic Singapore Flyer. It presents an immersive experience through the use of interactive multimedia and intimate storytelling format told through the lens of Singapore Flyer.

The Story accumulates with each gallery and culminates in the climatic realisation of the actual view onboard Flyer's scenic flights. This attraction aims to create the emotional resonance with Singapore Flyer and how the success story of Singapore's transformation is the very foundation that sets the possibility of its engineering and architectural breakthrough.

:: About Project Happy Feet ::

The race is inspired by the many school children in countries who walk between 3 to 5km, either barefooted or in slippers, to a school nearby - if there is a school nearby.

By getting participants to walk in a similar distance in slippers, the organizer hope people will ʻputʼ themselves in the shoes (or slippers!) of these underprivileged school children and do their part to contribute towards them having a chance at education. For the younger participants, PHF hope they walk away with appreciation for what they have been given, and feel inspired and empowered to do something for their counterparts who are less privileged.

Though the event is not really a race in the competitive sense, PHF hope to send the message that there is great urgency for us to do something about education for underprivileged children around the world, and that we should race against time to give our support and make that positive impact now.

I received a pair of tickets to watch a movie preview of You Are the Apple of My Eye 《那些年，我们一起追的女孩》 on 5th October 2011 (Wed), at Shaw Lido Cineplex (Hall 2), courtesy of TwentiethCentury Fox and omy.sg! It was an exclusive opportunity to watch the movie way in advance, as the movie will be officially released only on 10 November 2011 (special sneaks: 4 November – 7 November).

This movie brings back fond memories of those schooling days, with 'puppy love' and other elements. Hope that the movie casts will be able to come to Singapore when the movie is launched in Singapore.

:: About the movie ::

Adolescence is like a heavy rain. Even though you catch a cold from it, you still look forward to experiencing it once again.

Based on the same-titled book (that’s based on his own story) by popular Taiwanese writer Giddons Ko (九把刀), the Taiwanese production tells a story of a young man, Ko-Teng 柯騰 (Chen-Tung Ko 柯震東), who has several close friends with a crush on Shen Chia-Yi 沈佳宜 (Michelle Chen 陳妍希). Those friends of Ko's thus moved in unison from Ching Cheng's junior high school straight into the senior high school division in pursuit of her.

Naughty in nature, Ko was ordered by their teacher to sit in front of honor student Shen for her to keep close tabs on him. The two hadn't hit it off at first but Ko gradually fell for Shen, who was always pressuring him to study hard. On the other hand, Shen became impressed by the contrasting values Ko represented. Ko started pursuing Shen but Shen remained hesitant.

After graduation from senior high, Ko and Shen almost became a couple but the deal was spoilt by a dukeout competition organized by Ko.

Growing up together to witness their beloved Shen walking down the aisle to become someone else's wife, these boys have learned their coming-of-age lessons and continue to pursue each's happiness.

In Lim Shing Ee’s installation, A Dozen of Those , twelve large bright red helium balloons, each being held by a faceless brown figure sitting on an equally mundane and ordinary looking brown boulder, bespeak her dilemma as a female Singapore artist living in Japan with her Japanese husband and two young sons. Struggling to balance the choices concerning her identity, loyalty, nationality and sense of belonging, the work is a metaphor for the conflicting forces that confront her which are often beyond her control.

Lim's artistic practice explores mental processes of encoding and decoding fragments collected from simple everyday encounters, finding familiarity in the unfamiliar, and redefining identities through associations. Her installation works, paintings and drawings that celebrate simple objects and forms with familiar yet abstract compositions, have been referred to as the “mental maps of the mundane” - works that are deceptively familiar and simple, yet bizarrely seductive.

A Dozen of Those aptly describe the sense of displacement and dislocation that all those who uproot themselves from their familiar environments must feel.

Heroically, they ventured across unchartered waters and into unknown territories, braving danger and uncertainty in the high seas. Stories of high adventure also surround fictional heroes like Sinbad the Sailor, who capture our imagination for their wild encounters with monsters and adventures.

Alongside these figures, history is filled with stories of ordinary people from wonderfully diverse backgrounds who leave everything behind to discover new beginnings across continents and oceans. These journeys of uncertainty and peril also embody dreams of promise and future.

Inspired by these historical characters and stories of adventure, The Shape of a Dream is a theatrical and imaginary tale of pilgrims on a journey of a lifetime. Explorers, emperors, pirates, sailors, prisoners and island natives, with fantastical creatures like mermaids and monsters interact in highly symbolic, dramatic, entertaining and visually engaging pockets of human and superhuman activity.

The pilgrims move across vast oceans and terrains bearing curiously shaped, towering structures- symbols of the past, present and future, of hope and necessity, and of dreams taking shape. The enigmatic larger-than-life symbols they bear, morph and evolve, in turn, surprising and awesome, to capture the physical, metaphysical and spiritual dimensions that journeys kindle.

Three Pilgrimages depart at different points of the Night Festival grounds. The exciting journeys lead to a final encounter, both real and surreal in a journey across all boundaries.

From the outset, the designer wanted to create something dynamic and interactive, rather than simply an “object d’art”. It was a conscious choice not to deviate from the “pig” form as it is a powerful and recognisable paradigm.

The design aims to bring a combination of relevance both to the inherent function of the object (saving), a cultural undertone (symbolism), and finally humour and the love for cute animals (feeding the pig until it rolls forward!).

When the piggy bank is empty, it rolls back on its hind legs and looks up hungrily waiting to be fed. As it gets fed with more coins through its mouth, the weight will eventually make it roll forward, turning it from a hungry pig to a happy pig, joyously throwing its hind legs up in the air! This is also a tongue-in-cheek reflection of the joys of eating in Asia.

Launched in July 2010, Sold.sg is an auction site where users use tokens to bid for brand new items starting at $0.00, offering huge discounts. The items are sourced by the company and put up for bidding on the site. This fun and entertaining website was launched in July 2010.

It's free registration! Registration is just a few simple steps. After clicking on the email confirmation, you are now a registered user of Sold.sg! After registration, you will be given 10 complimentary tokens as "New Member Bonus Tokens".

So I went to their main page and look for items to bid. There are a wide range of items to choose from. Each time you press the 'BID' button, you used up 1 token, the price of the product increases and the time remaining on the clock will also increase. It's so easy to use!

And when you are not fast and decisive enough, the item that you wanted to bid will be gone! Once the timer goes to 0 seconds, the last bidder wins the auction.

Quick tips on how to shoot photos of fireworks.

1. Get a tripod.

2. Position the camera on where you want to capture the shot.

How do you keep that initial warm and fuzzy feeling glowing as times goes by when you are together for a while? Satisfy the deep emotions need of your loved one.

1. Words of Affirmation - expressing your love through words

- show your loved one that you are proud of her when she gets promoted at work.

- shower your loved one with daily compliments and encouragement through handwritten card, phone, SMS and email.

If this is your love language, unsolicited compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” are important—hearing the reasons behind that love sends your spirits skyward. Say it often and mean it with all your heart. Be sincere, and go beyond sweet talk.

Insults can leave you shattered and are not easily forgotten.

2. Quality Time - make time for each other

- Have fun, laugh and do something new each time when both meet up together.

- Give your full, undivided attention to your loved one.

- Be there for her when she needs you and let her know she can always count on you.

- Even if both of you are busy to meet up, hearing each other's voice through a simple 1-hr bedtime chat make her know the other one is someone they could always turn to and make her feel loved.

Being there for your loved one is critical, but really being there—with the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standby—makes your significant other feel truly special and loved.

Distractions, postponed dates, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful.

3. Receiving Thoughtful Gifts

Showering your loved one with gifts is an expression of genuine affection. Don’t mistake this love language for materialism; the receiver of gifts thrives on the love, thoughtfulness, and effort behind the gift.

- patiently queuing to buy your loved one's favourite food.

- going to different shops to buy the ultimate gift.

The process is more valuable than the gift itself. Giving is a joy no matter how much trouble is involved.

"Girls are usually shy. They expect the guy to take the initiative to show his love."

If you give your loved one something out of the blue, it means the world to the person.

If you speak this language, the perfect gift or gesture shows that you are known, you are cared for, and you are prized above whatever was sacrificed to bring the gift to you.
A missed birthday, anniversary, or a hasty, thoughtless gift would be disastrous—so would the absence of everyday gestures.

4. Acts of Service

Acts of love speak louder than words.

- When your loved one is moving out into a new home, offer to help her to pack her belongings.
- When she is carrying something heavy, get over to her to help carry the stuff.

- Cook porridge and soup for her when she's sick.

- She helps you to iron your clothes.

Instead of "sitting around" (signal of don't care), give her a helping hand. Show her that you care for her and love her. Do it out of love and you will not feel like a chore at all, and even the smallest action will spell: I care.

Anything you do to ease the burden of responsibilities weighing on an “Acts of Service” person will speak volumes. The words he or she most want to hear: “Let me do that for you.”

Laziness, broken commitments, and making more work for them tell speakers of this language their feelings don’t matter.

5. Physical Touch

This language isn’t all about the bedroom. A person whose primary language is Physical Touch is, not surprisingly, very touchy. Hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder, or face—they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Physical presence and accessibility are crucial, while neglect or abuse can be unforgivable and destructive.

Be aware of each other's love language (emotion need).

- know what your loved one need.

- know what you need.

"A relationship is about providing what your loved one wants and not about providing what you think they need."

Once you understand this, you are able to get past each other's differences and come to a compromise to match each other's expectations.

On a separate note,

‎1. Mistakes are part and parcel of life. "No matter how silly, embarrassing, life-threatening the mistakes are, look at the bright side. At least you survived the ordeal to emerge a champion."

2. There are always two sides to every story.

3. Don’t over analyse things! "Analysing is good when done in moderation but when it is taken to the extreme, it can be fatal!"
