Singaporean fans include Mr Chen Shichang, 25, a student who has spent about $300 on items such as a commemorative coin set ($208), a Lyo plush toy, as well as keychains and pins.
He said: "I wanted something to commemorate this occasion, and also to celebrate our nation's hosting of this world event."However, his choices are design-driven too."The coin set's design is elegantly done, and only a limited quantity has been minted, making it a very attractive collectors' item," he said.
:: Tips on making the best of your coin investment ::
- Read up beforehand.
- Pick out proof coins made from a precious metal like gold or silver. Avoid plated coins.
- Look out for historical significance, like the anniversary of a major event, or the first of its kind.
- Scarcity - the more limited the supply, the tighter the demand, which should drive up prices.
- Look for 3rd party certification from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
- Check carefully for a coin's condition and the way it was made.
